Our 80s theme certainly was colourful! January 2016 I'll be celebrating 6 years of teaching Zumba. I still love every minute :-) We've already seen some new faces in our first class for the year last night and I'm looking forward to meeting lots more. I occasionally hear mumbles of Zumba dying out but contrary to that we still see new faces who havent tried Zumba before so I reckon we're here to stay.

We had so much fun at our Christmas party in December and made good use of the photo booth! And of course one of the most popular resolutions must be to get in shape, especially after the Christmas blow out and possibly being a kilo or 2 heavier than this time last month. But the fact of the matter is that most of us don't stick to most of our resolutions. I'm certainly in that category and I'm getting to be of the mindset that there's no point setting them cos

Well it's that time of year again when pretty much all of us make resolutions with the best intentions of sticking to them.

And of course one of the most popular resolutions must be to get in shape, especially after the Christmas blow out and possibly being a kilo or 2 heavier than this time last month.

But the fact of the matter is that most of us don't stick to most of our resolutions. Try a Zumba class - no - try a month of Zumba classes. If you like it after a month, the chances are you'll stick to it. Why? Because it's FUN.

Put away those excuses - you're NOT too fat, thin, old, unfit, uncoordinated, busy or whatever else you can think of. There were around 120 people at the event who partied hard and the result was that over $5000 was raised!! It's amazing to be able to have so much fun with the proceeds going to such a good cause. If only I had a dollar for every excuse I'd ever heard! Statements like "I really should come to Zumba" really sadden me. Feeling like you *should* come to Zumba is the *worst* reason ever IMO! So I've started to change the way I talk to people about my classes. "Come and have fun with me for an hour. Oh and there will be some dancing around to some funky music. My usual response is that we learn Zumba the same way that most of us learned the Macarena - jump in with your mates and follow along! But of course for some of us it's a little intimidating to try and just follow along. So the good news is that zumba have just released some basic moves videos on YouTube. Here's the one for Salsa - enjoy! One of the reasons I find Zumba so appealing (and what I encourage strongly in my classes) is that there are no judgements, comparisons or competitions. (The wonderful Tanya Beardsley always reminds us that we leave our egos 'at the door' too.) And yes, I do like the odd burger....

Awwwwww!

I just couldn't resist sharing this with you - my very first ballroom exam in nineteen seventy something! The socks are a great addition, don't you think?! If I remember correctly this was for Old Time dance which, particilarly if you're Australian, you may not have heard of. It's a sort of sequence dance style where you have set dances - in this case I would have done the Lilac waltz for my exam.

Famous at last!

The management of the Leslie St Centre where we hold our Monday classes have been kind enough to put our classes on the board, albeit until something new comes along! Our lovely Jayne had the pleasure of her 2 puppies' company while she was (trying to) rehearse last night so she figured they may aswell look the part and as her Zumba pants were a bit long she opted for the heaband look. This has elements of a style of martial arts called Capoeira. You may have missed that we sneaked in some martial arts, but this is because this style combines elements of dance, as well as acrobatics. The move that we've 'stolen' is based on a move at the heart of Capoeira called ginga. The video featured here shows the ginga.
